The Black Death

In class recently, we were able to watch a film titled The Black Death. This movie was about the bubonic plague that tore through Europe in the 14th century. The film showed almost a too realistic view of what the bubonic plague looked like growing on its victims. I really enjoyed how instead of just giving the facts of the disease, it also talked about the political and religious implications the diseases caused. It also touched on how friends and families of the afflicted reacted to the sickness. Families and friends had abandoned their loved ones in order to stay safe and healthy.
The healers of the time could not find the cause of the disease as the healthcare was primitive, so as more and more people died, priests pointed to supernatural causes. People believed God was upset at the world and decided to end it. Many people during the time of the Black Death believed they were living during the apocalypse.
The theme of death that the movie brings up is an important one. Although people like to avoid speaking about it, its on people's minds. Events like the Black Plague made people realize life is precious and is a gift from God not to be wasted. You should take every opportunity not to waste your life as it is only a one time deal.
