Mary in Art Film
"The
Faces of Mary in Art" film displays and analyzes the numerous portrayals
of Mary and how culture interprets them. Most of the artwork of Mary depicts
her as Mary the Mother of Jesus or God. She is placed in artwork with Jesus
with fluctuations in His age. Although Mary is
the Mother of God, she is not his mother in the sense that she is older than
God or the source of her Son’s divinity, for she is neither. Mary has been
depicted with many titles. Not only is she the Mother of the Lord, she is the
Virgin, Protector, and Mother of the Church. In a lot of the paintings, Mary
displays a kind of natural beauty with her innocence and caring nature. A
Madonna is a representation of Mary and these images are major icons of the
Catholic Church. The Madonna and the infant Jesus are usually sitting on a
throne while angels adore them. The halo surrounding the head of Jesus
demonstrates his holiness. The Madonna cradles her infant Jesus. The Council of
Ephesus in 431 AD proclaimed Mary as the "God-bearer". The
Renaissance depicted Mary as adoring her Son by having her kneel down in
veneration. I find it interesting that the paintings depict Mary with Jesus as
an infant, however, Jesus displays some kind of maturity in the way He
parts his hand like he his delivering His good news.
