The Black Death

The film, The Black Death, which we watched in class, was slightly gorier than I had anticipated. I had no idea how devastating the effects of black plague truly were; in particular, in regards to how the disease was so widespread. It was interesting how the film incorporated other aspects pertaining to the Black Death as opposed to just the cut-and-dry facts about the plague and how many lives were lost as a result. For example, the film discussed the changes in art throughout the years when the plague was in full effect. Before the plague occurred, art depicted people who were mostly alive; however, after the plague, artists began incorporating skeletons to their paintings and artwork. With the incorporation of these skeletons, it showed how death is always looming over us.

Personally, the concept that death is a constant subconscious thought is quite fascinating mainly because death is a concept which is so prominent and inevitable; people startthinking about it on a more consistent basis and even incorporate death to their daily life. In regards to people’s view’s pertaining to death today when compared with people’s views pertaining to death thousands of years ago; furthermore, are the views the same or rather similar; personally, in our society today, similar views pertaining to death can be seen when compared with people’s views pertaining to death during the era of the plague.

Death is not a common thought on a daily basis; primarily due to the fact that death is inevitable. People should enjoy their lives; thus, the thought of death it will make life less enjoyable. However, I do believe that when some sort of tragedy or epidemic occurs; similar to an epidemic such as the Black Death; subconsciously, death becomes more prominent. When people around you are dying on a regular basis, you cannot help but think when it will be your turn to die, or if you will be spared and live. As per the previous sentence, personally, today’s society has a similar position pertaining to death incomparison to those who lived during the time of the Black Death.
