Cenacolo di Sant'Apollonia

My visit to the Convent of Saint Apollonia reminded me very much of the other art exhibits and museums that I have visited in my time in Florence.  Very much like the art exhibit which also currently encompasses the original refectory in Santa Croce, part of the exhibit here was originally a refectory, as well.  It was interesting of course to see the differences in ways artists have portrayed the Bible story of the Last Supper- for it must reveal their personal thoughts and perceptions as well.  Although it seemed relatively small-scale place, I did find one work of significance. The most interesting, and undoubtedly the most famous of the works in the Cenacolo di Sant'Apollonia is Andrea del Castagno's painting depiction of The Last Supper.  After learning more about the work, I found out that Castagno's depiction of The Last Supper differs in some significant ways from other artists' depictions.  In the one present here, Judas is portrayed as a particularly dark figure, which represents his betray of Jesus.. much like how he is portrayed in the Bible itself.  This painting seems to embody most accurately the story of the Last Supper as it is written in Scripture.
