The thought
of a plague like the Black Death happening today is almost unimaginable. The
documentary we watched did a good job at showing the devastation this plague
caused at its peak in the fourteenth century. At this time in history where
medicine was still extremely primitive compared to what we have today it would
have been hard to understand the cause of the plague. People back then must
have found it hard to find hope, as there was almost no escaping the Plague. After
the plague Europe eventually recovered and the remaining population made
significant advancements in history.
With modern
medicine today a plague wiping out 30%-60% of the population seems impossible.
If something like this were to happen though there would be wide spread panic
and fear throughout the modern connected world. People would likely maintain
more hope than back in the 14th century, as we would likely know the
cause and have some degree of confidence that a cure would be found. Modern
society would undoubtedly be set back as humanity adjusted to the severe
decrease in population.
