As
a requirement for the course, I visited the National Archaeological Museum last
week. The museum was constructed by Giulio Paris for granduchessa Luisa
Maria of Austria in 1620. This multi-floor exhibit containing a vast array
of notable and less notable works of art was incredibly interesting. Out of the
many collections there including Roman, Etruscan, and Greek I would have to say the
Egyptian portion intrigued me the most. The fact that it is the second
largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in Italy is impressive. Sarcophagi
have always been of interest to me because they demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship
and skill with their vibrant colors. The mystery surrounding these artifacts
added to the overall experience. My grandfather is a big collector of small
Egyptian artifacts and viewing this section of amulets, pottery, tombs, and
bronze statues made me appreciate his hobby even more. It's fascinating how these
artifacts have stood the test of time just like the Shroud of Turin. It is
important for this world to preserve these works of past time so future
generations can learn about and appreciate what came before them.
