The Faces of Mary in Art

In the film, "The Faces of Mary in Art," there are various portrayals of Mary which are meant to convey various interpretations of her. In the Uffizi, in various paintings, Mary can be seen as a motherly figure, often cradling the body of her dead son; whereas, other times, she is seen as a protector. These depictions are often displayed in churches when the patrons of the church are asking Mary to watch over; and furthermore, protect them. Mary is even displayed as a shy virgin when the angel Gabriel appears to bring her the word of God.  These various interpretations of Mary highlight the larger issue present in the church; the issue being that there are many different ways to see not only the various stories, but the various people which comprise the religion of Christianity.

In regards to Mary, she does not only have a single role. She takes on various roles throughout her lifetime; namely, a protector, a mother, a virgin, and either, The "Mother of the lord" or "The Mother of God." The various depictions of Mary in artwork demonstrate these differentiating views.
