We also were able to visit the Church of St. Michael. I was very intrigued by the story of how the building used to be a market and how a fire destroyed almost everything except for an image of Mary. The building was then converted into a church. The artwork in the church was interesting as well. The mosaics on the ceiling indicated where the genders would sit. On the left side walking in were images of women of christian value and on the right side were images of men of christian value.

Archives and Church of St. Michael
Our field trip to the Archives was interesting to say the least. We were lucky enough to see books that date back almost a thousand years ago. We were able to see the people that were baptized in which churches and where and how people died. All of these pieces of historical information was written on parchment which is still legible to this very day. There was an interesting point made that shows in terms of record keeping, we may not be as advanced as we think. These books written on parchment have lasted hundreds of years but our records can be lost forever if the power was to go out and servers shut down. Our history would be lost forever but their's would survive.

The most ancient between the document we saw was dated 1057, so it's actually 956 years old ;-)
